Never Believe Anything Bad About God

If you explore the teachings of Jesus and choose to follow Him…you will find way more life and freedom that you can imagine.

Discussion Questions

Start Talking

  • When you were a kid, what was your view of God?
    • How has that changed over time?
  • Have you ever had a moment where your view of God shifted—either for better or worse?
    • What caused it?
  • Andy said, “Never believe anything bad about God.” What’s something bad you’ve believed about God in the past—or maybe still struggle with?

Read This

  • Read Genesis 3:1-13 and Genesis 3:21-24
    • Why do you think the serpent used the more generic name for God (Elohim) instead of Yahweh?
    • How does that subtle shift affect how we perceive God’s character?
    • In what ways did Eve’s view of God begin to change before she even ate the fruit?
    • God shows up with questions instead of accusations. How does that impact the way you think about God’s response to our mistakes?
    • The serpent suggested that God was distant, restrictive, and holding out. Which of those lies are most tempting for you to believe?
    • Have you ever felt like God was punishing you?
      • How does Genesis 3:22-24 reframe your understanding of God’s discipline or boundaries?

What Now

  • How does the picture of God clothing Adam and Eve change the way you view Him?
  • What’s the difference between viewing God as a rule-enforcer vs. a loving protector?
  • Andy shared the story of his daughter Lydia running away because she thought he was mad. Have you ever done that with God—run from Him out of fear or shame?
    • What happened?
  • Which of God’s questions from Genesis 3 (Where are you? Who told you? Have you eaten? What have you done?) resonates with you the most today?
    • Why?
  • What lie about God do you sense He might be inviting you to let go of?
  • What might it look like for you to “practice the presence” of God this week (e.g., using Lectio 365 or the Prayer of Examen)?
  • What is one thing you want to remember or apply from today’s discussion?
  • Take a moment to pray for one another—especially that each person would experience God as close, kind, and protective this week.
